During his career in television news, Waters covered a wide range of stories ranging from America's first manned space shot, to national political conventions, to coverage of several sessions of the North Carolina General Assembly. His broadcast work has been honored by a number of awards from such professional organizations as United Press International, Associated Press, and the Radio Television News Directors Association of the Carolinas. Waters has served as president of the North Carolina Associated Press Broadcasters Association, a member of the national board and the Carolinas board of the Radio Television News Directors Association. He was chairman of the RTNDAC committee which initiated the experiment with cameras and microphones in the courtrooms of North Carolina. Waters is active in several civic and community organizations. He is a member of the statewide and Wake County boards of directors of Kids Voting USA. Waters serves as a member of the board of directors of the Buy-Dot-Com Carolina Classic, an annual golf tournament on the former Nike Tour that benefits the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wake County. . He is a former member of the board of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce and of the Chamber's Executive Committee and outgoing Vice Chairman of the Chamber's Communications Board. He served as Chairman of the 2000 United Arts Campaign in Wake County. He is an honorary life-time member of the Radio Television News Directors Association of the Carolinas. Waters is a past president of the Research Triangle Region of the American Lung Association and a past chairman of the board of directors of Partners of Wake County. He has also served terms on the boards of the following organizations:
Waters is a former member of the Advisory Council of the Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau and he has served on several committees of the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters. Waters received his Bachelor of Science degree in English and Social Studies from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. He completed further academic work on Urban-Rural Growth Problems at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition, he has taken management and leadership courses at Bowling Green State University and the University of Massachusetts. He is married to the former Martha Harrison, a native of Thomasville, NC. They have one daughter, Kimberly W. Grant, an Atlanta attorney. (11/9/00)
