CAPITOL BROADCASTING COMPANY WINS 1997 MEDIA AWARD
TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA -- The National Hurricane Conference announced today that it will give its 1997 Media Award to the Capitol Broadcasting Company of Raleigh, NC.
The awards committee cited Capitol " for superb and comprehensive news coverage before, during and after Hurricane's Bertha and Fran over its three electronic outlets WRAL-TV, WRAZ-TV and WRAL-FM, as well as over the North Carolina News Network with its 93 affiliate stations across the state."
The committee noted that Capitol Broadcasting, "provided essential information in the aftermath of Hurricane Fran to hundreds of thousands of residents of eastern North Carolina who were without electricity and had to rely on portable radios for news about recovery efforts. We also were impressed with the coverage of the North Carolina News Network which, for two weeks after Fran, carried a series of 15 minute updates on such vital information as where to go for food, water, and other assistance."
The committee praised Greg Fishel, chief meteorologist for CBC, for his excellent management of hurricane coverage in the 1996 storm season.
The award will be presented April 23 during the 19th annual National Hurricane Conference in Houston, Texas. More than 1,200 delegates are expected to attend.
The National Hurricane Conference is sponsored by 18 regional and national organizations interested in hurricane preparedness. They range from the NOAA and the National Hurricane Center to FEMA and the American Red Cross.
