Television

CBC owns five television stations in North Carolina from Charlotte to the coast. Two CBS affiliates, one FOX station and a WB and a UPN affiliate make up the CBC television family. These stations win awards for community service, excellence in broadcasting, and ground-breaking original programs including regional Emmys and a national Gracie. These stations lead the industry in technology; WRAL-TV became the first all HD (high-definition) news operation in the country, the first to launch a local news channel and local weather channel and its web site, one of the first local news stations on the Internet, WRAL.com has been named the nation’s best more than once.

After a heated three-year battle in Washington, DC, CBC won the license for Channel 5 in Raleigh from the Federal Communications Commission in 1956. WRAL-TV went on the air on December 15th of that year, with CBC Founder A.J. Fletcher saying, “Information to which the public is entitled will be given without bias or favor. Only in this way can our people make an intelligent choice on these issues affecting our welfare.” A leader in the local news field and a national pioneer in television technology, WRAL-TV has been the Triangle’s CBS affiliate since 1985.
