About Meals on Wheels of Wake County, Inc.:
Meals on Wheels of Wake County, Inc. serves 1,500 noontime meals every weekday to the elderly, homebound and persons with disabilities of Wake County. Meals are served in three separate processes: the first is hot meals to homebound individuals, the second is hot meals to seniors in congregate dining rooms, and the third is frozen meals to dialysis patients and other homebound individuals who live in isolated areas of Wake County.  The home delivered meals are delivered by a cadre of 2,200 volunteers, five days a week, Monday through Friday.

Meals on WheelsOn February 12, 1974, the first meals were delivered in Wake County. Ten volunteers took nine meals to elderly in downtown Raleigh. In fiscal year 2008-2009, 373,500 meals are budgeted to be served.

In 2001, Meals on Wheels of Wake County, Inc. and the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, Inc. collaborated to form a
non-profit third party company called Food Runners Collaborative, Inc. This company was created to build, own and operate a building that would house both organizations and provide a community kitchen to assist both organizations in the support of their respective missions. They are pleased with the results of the new facility as it allows them to operate much more efficiently.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on WheelsAbout Meals on Wheels of Durham, Inc.:
Established in 1975, Meals on Wheels of Durham, Inc. delivers hot, nutritious meals to Durham County residents who are unable to provide or prepare meals for themselves. Since its inception, Meals on Wheels of Durham, Inc. has served more than one and a half million meals through the generous help and support of its staff, volunteers, donors and sponsors.

Meals on Wheels of Durham, Inc. is a non-profit agency committed to enhancing the quality of life for eligible homebound adults in our community. Their mission is to serve the elderly, frail, disabled, convalescing and others who cannot provide proper nutrition for themselves. Dedicated volunteers deliver lunches to clients each weekday, with the objective of improving the nutritional status and health of these individuals. It is their goal to provide the combination of nutritious meals and social contact that will help their clients to remain independent as long as possible.

Meals on WheelsParticipation in a Meals on Wheels program can help individuals reduce the chance of premature institutionalization; allow elderly married couples to remain together in the comfort of their own home; and remove a significant barrier preventing or delaying the discharge of a patient from a hospital or institution, thereby permitting the convalescing process to occur in the familiar surroundings of one's own home.
