On Thursday, October 30, 2008, Capitol Broadcasting Company President Jim Goodmon announced that Steven D. Hammel has been named Vice President & General Manager of WRAL-TV. The appointment is effective November 10.
Hammel comes to WRAL from Phoenix, where he served as Vice President & General Manager of KPHO-TV, the CBS affiliate in the nation’s twelfth largest television market. During his five-year tenure he led the station to a coveted national Edward R. Murrow Award and 33 news Emmy Awards. He was also actively involved in the community--establishing an ongoing volunteerism campaign and serving on numerous non-profit boards.
"We’re excited to have Steve join the team as we move into the digital transition," says Goodmon. "News and local programming will be more important than ever in the future and Steve brings the experience and commitment to meet the challenge."
Hammel began his broadcasting career as a radio reporter in his hometown of Pottsville, Pa. He was first named a television News Director at the age of 24 at WHTM-TV in Harrisburg, Pa.
Later, Hammel led news departments at WSTM-TV in Syracuse, KDFW-TV in Dallas, WHEC-TV in Rochester, NY, KMOV-TV in St. Louis and WJLA-TV in Washington, DC.
"For years I’ve always admired WRAL’s strong news tradition and cutting-edge leadership in technology. It will be my privilege to lead such a dedicated group of professionals," Hammel said.
Hammel is a graduate of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. He and his wife Renee have two golden retrievers.
