CBC President & CEO Jim Goodmon and his wife, AJ Fletcher Foundation President Barbara Goodmon, are now Hall of Famers.   At the first formal event in the brand new Raleigh Convention Center, the Goodmons and 12 others were inducted into the Raleigh Hall of Fame.

The dinner and ceremony took place on the evening of Tuesday, Sept 9, 2008.

Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker helped make the presentations in front of the large crowd on a very rainy night.  Former WRAL-TV Anchor Charlie Gaddy emceed the ceremony, which took place after an elegant dinner.

The elegant event takes place at the newly opened Raleigh Convention Center.

“We are here to honor the outstanding group of citizens who have dedicated themselves in so many ways to make the City of Raleigh the outstanding place that we live in today,” said L. Merritt Jones, Chair of the Raleigh Hall of Fame Board of Directors.

“That’s what makes a great city,” said Meeker.  “It’s not just the buildings. … It’s the people and the things they do and the values that they stand for.”

The Goodmons were honored for serving the Raleigh community from humanitarian work for the needy to support for the arts, business and education in their nearly 40 years of marriage. 

“Their work with the A.J. Fletcher Foundation, the Healing Place and dozens of other groups has provided hope to the less fortunate and enriched the lives of citizens throughout the Triangle,” said Gaddy as he introduced the couple.

“Barbara and Jim work very well and serve as a tremendous team and role models for the community,” said long-time friend Dianne Davidian.

The Goodmons were inducted alongside Frank Daniels, Jr. and his wife, Julia Daniels; Alice and Thad Eure, who were inducted posthumously; and several other stalwart citizens of the capital city.

All of the honorees received medallions designed by long-time Raleigh resident and artist Bob Rankin.

Capitol Broadcasting Company and the WRAL Community Fund of the Triangle served as a Grand Patron for the event.

The program also debuted a video accompanying “The Raleigh Song,” written and composed by WRAL-TV Anchor Bill Leslie.  Leslie wrote the song a few years ago when commissioned by a Hall of Famer.  WRAL-TV Documentary Photographer Jay Jennings put together the video using many shots of the city, its people and its events.

The CBC couple join Jim Goodmon’s uncle Fred Fletcher, inducted in 2007, and grandfather A.J. Fletcher, inducted in the inaugural year of 2005, in the prestigious Raleigh Hall of Fame.
