WRAL-TV made a huge
leap forward with its 16th Annual Coats for the Children Telethon. Held
on Friday, December 10, 2004, the event raised $73,400, an amazing $10,000
jump above last year’s total.
Volunteers manned
the phone lines accepting pledges from 6am until midnight. WRAL-TV produced
three live half-hour specials during the day at 12:30pm, 7pm & 11:35pm.
A line-up of WRAL
personalities hosted the programs, featuring companies, school groups,
and others who brought donations of coats and cash to present live on
the air. As part of the entertainment, the Durham Bulls'
Wool E. Bull stopped by and WRAL-TV Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel played
his tuba with the Salvation Army Brass Band during the 7pm special.
Special guests also
brought gifts as pledge incentives for callers. American Music Jubilee
Singer and former WRAL News Reporter & Anchor Tina Seldin presented
her holiday CD and tickets to the American Jubilee’s holiday show
to several callers during her appearance on the 12:30pm show.
The telethon is a
highlight in the Coats for the Children campaign held each year by WRAL-TV.
In conjunction with Jiffy Lube & Chick-fil-A, the station collects
gently used and new coats from the community. Funds are also raised to
help buy new coats and other winter gear for underprivileged children
through the Salvation Army.
The Coats for the
Children campaign kicked off with the Raleigh Christmas parade on Saturday,
November 20th, and will end on December 31st. Coats, hats, gloves, scarves
may still be donated through December 31st.
Since 1989, WRAL has
collected over 82,000 coats and has raised over $700,000 through the Coats
for Children campaign.
