Clay Aiken, in town on his Independent Tour with fellow American Idol alum Kelly Clarkson, stopped by WRAL-FM and WRAL-TV to pay a visit on Monday, March 1, 2004. He & Clarkson played to a sold out RBC Center that evening as part of their eight-week tour. Aiken arrived at the WRAL-FM studios on Hillsborough Street about 10am to the joy of his fans, some of whom had been camping outside the station since 2:30am. He spent time chatting with Bill Jordan & Sheri Logan on their MIX 101.5 morning show and then stepped out on the balcony to wave to screaming Clayniacs. Quite a crowd had gathered on the front lawn of WRAL-FM, waving signs and banners and clad in all manner of Clay T-shirts. Fans had come from all over the US and Canada, one couple even flying in from Arizona for the concert and appearance.
The American Idol star then made his way to WRAL-TV for an appearance on the noon news with anchors Bill Leslie & Lynda Loveland. Another crowd of faithful fans congregated by the fountain in front of the Western Blvd studio, hoping for a glimpse of their favorite singer.
Aiken & Clarkson opened their tour in Charlotte the previous week. Aiken performed several numbers from his debut CD, "Measure of a Man," as well as a duet with Clarkson. |
