CBC Stations To Air Bulls 100th Anniversary Special

The Durham Bulls will hit the airwaves on Saturday, August 24, 2002, with "Grand Slam! 100 Years of Durham Bulls Baseball." The half-hour special will be broadcast on both WRAL-TV5 and FOX50.

"Bulls baseball is a Triangle treasure," said Bulls General Manager George Habel. "On our 100th anniversary we wanted to commemorate Bulls' history from the perspective of fans and players, the people that have given this ballclub its' enduring quality."

The past 100 years of Bulls baseball will be commemorated on the television special "Grand Slam!"

Produced by Durham's Freeman Group, "Grand Slam!" includes footage from the 1994 release "Ghosts in the Ballpark" movie about the Bulls final season at the historic Durham Athletic Park; the park where the Kevin Costner movie "Bull Durham" was filmed. Several segments of the special are narrated by Crash Davis, and a variety of Bulls players and fans were interviewed by the documentary crew including current major league players Andy Sheets and Lee Gardner.

"It's interesting to hear the players' perspective on what it's like to be a Durham Bull," said Bulls' PR Director Matt DeMargel. "You would think most of these guys consider Durham as a stepping stone to the major leagues, but all of the players interviewed really seem to appreciate what it means to be a Durham Bull."

"Grand Slam!" will air on FOX50 at 3:00pm before the Saturday afternoon Atlanta at Los Angeles Major League Baseball telecast. The program will air at 7:30pm on WRAL-TV. VHS copies of "Grand Slam!" will be available at the ballpark gift shop for $14.99.
