The local chapter
of Keep America Beautiful and the Wake County Department of Environmental
Services presented WRAL-FM with a commendation on Monday, January
8th at 2:00pm at the Wake County Courthouse. The organization recognized
the CBC radio station for its November 2000 promotion to collect
election yard signs after Election Day.
In an effort
to clean up the post-election clutter of political signs, WRAL-FM
(MIX 101.5) collected signs in the parking lot of North Hills Mall
in Raleigh two days after the November election. The promotion promised
$1 per sign for up to 50 signs per person; only 2,000-3,000 signs
were expected. MIX collected nearly 23,000 signs and ended up running
out of ready cash because of the overwhelming response to the promotion.
Those who did not receive money at the collection site later received
a check from MIX for the signs they brought. Capitol Broadcasting
Company's Property Management staff was called in to help haul off
the several truckloads of discarded signs.
The presentation
was part of the Wake County Board of Commissioners Meeting at 2:00pm
on that date. Members of MIX 101.5's Early Morning Show staff and
the Property Management staff of Capitol Broadcasting Company attended
the event to receive the commendation.
