Pelicans End 2001 Season

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans finished the 2001 season on Saturday, September 3, with a 13th inning loss to the Kinston Indians. A record breaking 5,790 fans bought tickets to the game, the largest paid attendance of the 2001 season and the second largest in Pelicans history.

The Pelicans tied the game at the bottom of the ninth and held out for another four innings when the Indians went up by one and won the final season game 5-4. . The Pelicans ended up third in the Carolina League's South Division with a record of 71-67, making them the only team in the Carolina League to win at least 70 games in each of the past three seasons.

The Pelicans finished their 2001 season on Saturday, Sept. 1.

Despite missing the playoffs, the Pelicans had four players named to the league's end of the season All-Star Team. Pelican Pitcher Trey Hodges shares the Pitcher of the Year title with Potomac's Jimmy Journell. Shortstop Wilson Betemit and Outfielder Ryan Langerhans made the All-Star team as well. Third Baseman Troy Cameron, traded to Kinston earlier in the season, also received All-Star honors. All four were on on the 2001 Carolina League mid-season All-Star team as well, and Betemit played on the 2001 World Team in the Futures All-Star Game.

Hodges and Langerhans won recognition from the Atlanta Braves, Hodges as Pitcher of the Year and Langerhans as the Pelicans Player of the Year. The twosome will be honored with other Braves Minor League award winners before the Braves game on Saturday, September 29.
