Raleigh's Poe Center
Presents Award To CBC President & CEO
The
Alice Aycock Poe Center for
Health Education held an awards presentation at its annual meeting
on Wednesday, May 23. Capitol Broadcasting Company President & CEO Jim
Goodmon received the President's Award from the Center at the luncheon.

Award for his dedication to educating the public about health related
issues. |
The
Poe Center awarded Goodmon for his work with CBC and WRAL-TV in promoting
health education and prevention in North Carolina. CBC serves as community
partner to the Poe Center with financial support and WRAL-TV will
serve as media sponsor for the Center's "Ready, Set, Poe" fun run
in August. |
In the presentation,
Poe Center President Leslie Silverstein cited the work WRAL-TV has done
with its Breast Cancer Awareness campaign and other health team coverage.

In accepting
the award Goodmon said, "Our opportunity is the resources we have."
He encouraged the audience to continue working towards goals of
health education and early childhood development and challenged
that the ability to futher those aims is already available.
NC Department
of Health & Human Resources Secretary Carmen Hooker Buell served
as the keynote speaker for the event.

She spoke of her department,
saying, "We are committed to being a force for change. The Poe Center has
shown that it is a force for change."
Governor Mike Easley
made a brief appearance at the event to congratulate the Poe Center on
their good work. He cited their early support of former Governor Hunt's
SmartStart program. Goodmon served as the first President of SmartStart
to help get the program off the ground.
Other award winners
included Willard Ross, who received the Faye L. Miller Distinguished Service
Award, and Wake Med's Ray Champ, who received the Gordon Smith, Jr. Award.
The Poe Center is
a non-profit organization that provides innovate health education programs
for preschoolers, school-age children and adults in its five learning
theaters. WRAL-TV Community Affairs Director Loretta Harper serves on
the Board of the Poe Center, as does Martha Waters, wife of CBC retiree
Ben Waters.
