Bulls End Season With Record Breaking and Player Awards


Duke Law School visiting professor Susan French was the Bulls' 500,000th ticket buyer. She was recognized on the field at the final home game, during which the Bulls broke their record for season paid attendance.

The Durham Bulls ended their 2001 season with a close loss at the Charlotte Knights on Labor Day, capping off a season of record attendance, award-winning players and the Bulls typical dedicated commitment to the fans. The Bulls ended the season 74-70 taking second place in the International League's South Division behind Norfolk.

On the final weekend of the 2001 season, the Bulls reached two impressive milestones. First, at the final home game on Saturday, September 1, the Bulls went over the 500,000 mark for paid attendance in one season. Only nine of 181 minor league teams have annual ticket sales of 500,000

or better. With several paid attendance record-breaking weekend games, the Bulls entertained 505,314 paying fans at home in 2001.

Then, the Bulls saw another record set on the second day of September. Manager Bill Evers became the winningest manager in Durham Bulls history with a victory at the Charlotte Knights (5-2). The win was Evers' 318th for the club. He broke the almost 70 year-old record of George Whitted, who led the Bulls to 317 wins in his stint as manager from 1927 to 1932.

The Bulls ticket staff was recognized at the final home game for record-breaking paid attendance during the 2001 season. Each received a commemorative set of steer horns. presented the Goodmon Awards for the 2001 season. Taking home honors were former Durham Bulls catcher Toby Hall, team MVP and the Dillard's Fan Favorite Award; Pitcher Mickey Callaway, Pitcher of the Year; Catcher Paul Hoover, Team Spirit Award; 2nd baseman/short stop Mike Caruso, Community Service Award.
