The YWCA of
Wake County inducted WRAL-TV Anchor Pam Saulsby into its Academy
of Women at a celebration on Thursday evening, November 2 at the
Embassy Suites in Cary. Two tables of Capitol Broadcasting Company
employees were on hand to help honor Saulsby at her induction.
Established
by the YWCA of Wake County in 1983, the Academy of Women honors
the outstanding and diverse achievements of women. Colleagues,
|
families and friends nominate women to be considered for induction. Each
year nine women are inducted into the Academy in the areas of Arts; Business,
Industry and Professions; Education; Government; Human Services; Physical
Fitness and Recreation; Teen Woman; Science and Technology; and Volunteer.
Saulsby was inducted
into the Academy of Women in the Business, Industry, and Professions category.
The Raleigh Professional Women's Forum made the nomination. Catherine
Thomas of CP&L presented Saulsby's award.
The YWCA described
her saying, "A role model and advocate for women, children, and minorities
everywhere, Pam Saulsby has become the constant voice of truth and reason
for many people in the Triangle. She has raised the standards of professionalism
and compassion in broadcast journalism by working for 22 years to improve
the quality of people's lives. Pam works tirelessly to challenge stereotypes
and asks that men and women in the news room be more sensitive to how
the media portrays women and minorities."
Saulsby's many achievements
include covering the first US tour of South Africa's anti-apartheid leader
Nelson Mandela, winning two Emmys and numerous other awards, and being
a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, the Raleigh
Professional Women's Forum and American Women in Radio and Television
among several other organizations. Saulsby's introduction included her
feeling that her teenage daughter Ashley Marie is "her inspiration and
the blessing in her life…the reason she does things such as For The Children."
