NCNN Captures Three First Place Awards from RTNDAC

The North Carolina News Network is pleased to announce that it has received three first place awards from the Radio Television News Directors Association of the Carolinas for 1998 news coverage.

First: NCNN was recognized as having the best radio on-line web site in the Carolinas. The judges said, "Its strong use of current and hourly news broadcasts and roundups, daily audio and weather dispatches, and strong extended audio features puts it over the top.....The NCNN Courier, a pre-packaged, e-mail newscast, is a great idea. The In-depth section is wonderful, spreading some of NCNN's best on-air features to a wider Web audience."

Second: The news network was honored with the Best Documentary award for a 30-minute program on the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Kathy Reid wrote and produced this special presenting the debate between those who felt the beacon should be moved to protect it from erosion, and those who thought such a foolhardy move would destroy this national treasure.

Third: NCNN's coverage of Hurricane Bonnie won the network RTNDAC's Best Spot news award. Matt Willoughby traveled to Atlantic Beach as Bonnie churned her way up the Carolina coast, Jay Joiner manned the State Emergency Response Center, and the rest of the news team covered Bonnie's impact on tourism, vacationers, agriculture, and area-shelters. This entry also won Best Spot news from the Associated-Press this year.

The network received second place RTNDAC awards in the consumer news, special report, general news, series, and sports categories. RTNDAC's awards will be officially presented in Chapel Hill the weekend of April 17th at organization's annual convention. The Associated Press convention is slated for the weekend of April 10th in High Point, NC.
