Kids Voting Launches Fourth Year of Student Elections in Wake County

Kids Voting, active in Wake County since 1996, is participating for the second time this year in local elections for Wake County Board of Education and Raleigh Mayor and City Council (October 5), and municipal elections in Apex, Cary, Fuquay-Varina, Garner, Holly Springs, Knightdale, Morrisville, Rolesville, Wake Forest, Wendell, and Zebulon (November 2). CBC has been an avid supporter of this program since it was introduced into Wake County back in 1996, and encourages all parents to bring their school age children to the voting precincts on Election Day.

Age -appropriate curriculum materials and Educator Handbooks containing information about this year's local elections are available to public, private, parochial, charter, and home schools. The handbooks include resource lists, book lists, voter registration information, sample letters to parents, and details about the 1999 elections. Curriculum activities can be correlated with national and NC social studies standards and fit well with the Character Education Initiative focus on respect in September and responsibility in November. The lessons are interesting, challenging, fun, and completely impartial and nonpartisan. To request handbooks or curriculum, call 833-1282. Kids Voting encourages adults to study the issues related to this fall's elections with young people at home and in the community and to take a student to an official polling site on October 5 or November 2.
