CBC
and WRAL-TV5 Recieve Award for "Empowering People with Disabilities" |
On Thursday, July
22, both Capitol Broadcasting Company and WRAL-TV5 were honored for our
outstanding philanthropy and empowering people with disabilities by the
Orange County Disability Awareness Council during their Ninth Annual Americans
with Disabilities Act Celebration. These Awards were established 25 years
ago under the Governor's Committee on Affairs of the Disabled.
|
|
The
criteria for nomination in this category is: Advancing the effort
of persons with disabilities by successfully conveying through the
electronic media, as well as gifts in kind, the total reality of persons
with disabilities. |
CBC and WRAL TV5
were nominated for:
- Taking on stories/projects
such as the 1999 Special Olympics Summer World Games (with 250 members
of the company volunteering to assist with the Games);
- Human interest
pieces on the Blind and Persons with limited Mobility, who shape and
mold the realistic pictures of the challenges faced. WRAL was especially
helpful by staying true to the subject and not sensationalizing the
story, ensuring the voice heard helped to change the perceptions and
break down the barriers that keep our communities apart;
- And finally, acknowledging
Greg Fishel, WRAL Meteorologist, and the work he did by adding follow-up
technology that enhanced the character "f" on the tv screen during emergency
situations and other times. Many stations followed TV 5's lead
. CBC has provided
financial gifts/grants, that gave the organization the means to bring
all people together to celebrate ADA each year.
Congratulations again for a job well done.
