Although it was not very visible from the road due to foliage, construction on the Myrtle Beach stadium officially began on April 13th. The first phase of construction, which consists of land preparation, started near the water tower on 21st Avenue North.

"We began by clearing with the emphasis on the stadium area itself," said Chris Whitley, project engineer with general contractor McDevitt, Street, and Bovis. "Soon we'll begin bringing in fill dirt to create the building pad." Whitley estimates that the land preparation phase of construction will take about two months.

"It's exciting to see activity on the site," said Gary Saunders, ticket sales manager for the team. "Simply seeing construction equipment on the site has generated an immediate interest with the fans. Season tickets sales have taken off, and in fact, there are only about 750 season tickets left."

The stadium, which will be home to the Atlanta Braves single A farm team, is scheduled to be completed in time for opening day Spring 1999.
