Baseball Established Youth Diamond Charity Fund |
The
Myrtle Beach Professional Baseball Club has established its charity foundation
called The Youth Diamond Fund. This fund will benefit Horry County school-age
youth by providing monies for athletic facilities such as baseball fields,
athletic equipment, sports-related training for athletic coaches and teachers,
and sports-related programs for children. It is estimated that the foundation
will generate between $70,000 and $85,000 per year for charity.
"It is our belief that children should be exposed to athletics at an early
age," general manager Steve Malliet explained. He continued to say that
children involved in sporting activities achieve above average grades
in school and are more physically fit than sedentary children. "Additionally,
we know that sports involvement helps children to develop the competitive
spirit and team-working skills that will help them succeed throughout
life," public relations director Tracy Coyle said.
The fund will have 501(c)(3) status, so donations from individuals and
businesses will be tax deductible as allowed by law. The board of directors
for the fund is currently being established, and the first fundraiser
will be held on Tuesday, May 12th during the Season Seat Meet at the All
Star Café.
The Seat Meet is the deadline for season ticket holders to reserve their
1999 Season Tickets and be able to choose their seats from the stadium
seating diagram. At this event, a silent auction will be held with all
proceeds benefiting the Youth Diamond Fund. Over 40 items will be auctioned
off including autographed Atlanta Braves memorabilia, a Joe Montana football
& jersey, a Mickey Mantle signed & numbered print, Waterford crystal,
sets of men's and ladies golf clubs, and framed prints.
The public is welcomed to the All Star to participate in the auction and
there is no charge for admission. For
