Fred Barber Retires from CBC

Fred Barber, Senior Vice President for Capitol Broadcasting Company, retired at the end of December, 1998. He has been in the broadcasting industry for 39 years and was with CBC since 1976.



The retirement cake was based on the framed drawing presented to Barber as a parting gift.


Barber started with Capitol in 1976 as the general manager of WRAL-TV in Raleigh, NC. He left to manage other stations in Atlanta and Pittsburgh, but returned to the Capitol family in 1987 as General Manager of WTTV in Indianapolis, IN. In 1990, he returned to Raleigh to oversee the television properties. He was made a Senior Vice President in 1994 and assumed the additional responsibility of WRAL-FM in 1997.

Barber said he plans to enjoy retirement. He would like to write, take some courses at area colleges, and continue his work with several nonprofit organizations. Currently, he is a Board member of the Raleigh Rescue Mission, the Salvation Army, and is working with a group to bring a new organization to Raleigh called, "The Healing Place."

The Staff honored him at a retirement party on Tuesday, December 22 in WRAL-TV Studio A. The theme of the party was oriented around the beach, as that is where Barber would like to spend a great deal of his retirement time. Click on any photo to see a larger version of it.

Ice cream was the perfect way to top off a beach party, at least Joyce Falchi and Nancy Church of WRAL-TV News thought so... I wonder why?

Fred admires the new bike, given in appreciation for all his devotion to the company, and in anticipation of his retirement at the beach.
