Martin Luther King, Jr. Water Monument Dedication

CBCers were part of the unveiling ceremony for the new Water Monument in the Martin Luther King Memorial Gardens in Southeast Raleigh. The company was a major contributor to the sculpture project. Corporate minority affairs director J.D. Lewis was among the speakers April 4th.



Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell was among the featured speakers, followed by his brother, Ralph Campbell, Jr. who is North Carolina State Auditor. Both are Raleigh natives, and their father is among those honored on the memorial. Fred Fletcher, Chairman Emeritus of the Raleigh Parks and Recreation Board, presided over the unveiling of the new water sculpture.

The water monument sculpture bears the names of 23 local persons "who made a difference, who stood tall in the quest for equal justice and the pursuit of freedom."

The initial monument honorees are: Dr John T. Caldwell; Ralph Campbell, Sr.: Fred Carnage; Rev. John Chavis; Dr Grady Davis; Dr. O.A. Dupree; Sister Mable Gary; Samuel Harris; Joseph H. Holt; Sr. Charles G. Irving; Sr. Paul R. Jervay, Sr.; Dr. John R. Larkin; Calvin E. Lightner; Rev. John W. Ligon; Samuel S. Mitchell; Berry OKelly; J.J. Sansom, Jr; Vee P. Stephenson; Mayor Avery Upchurch; Dr. Charles W. Ward; Harveleigh M. White; Peter Hines Williams; Dr Gus Witherspoon.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Gardens are at the intersection of MLK Boulevard and Tarboro Street in Southeast Raleigh near downtown. The CBC Corporate Property Management Department assisted with development of the gardens.
